The treatment with aligners is one of the most demanded in our clinics today because they allow us to maintain good hygiene, and they are very comfortable and aesthetic. However, this last characteristic is closely related to how we use and care for them, so today we will talk about how to clean them and in what situations we should remove them to keep their transparency intact.

WHEN SHOULD WE REMOVE THEM?
Aligners should be worn for at least 22 hours a day, and we must remove them whenever we eat any food. Regarding beverages, the only thing we should drink while wearing them is water, and we should avoid sugary drinks or those that stain the teeth, such as coffee, tea, or wine. Likewise, they should also be removed for smoking.

HOW TO KEEP THEM CLEAN
Now let's talk about how to keep them clean during the days they need to be worn in the mouth.

Not only should we brush our teeth after removing the aligners, but they should also be brushed with a brush exclusively used for them and with the help of a pH-neutral soap. It is important to know that we should avoid using toothpaste for cleaning the aligner, as it can scratch them and cause them to lose their transparency. If this is not enough, we can use specific effervescent crystals or tablets, which are also used to clean orthodontic retainers. These crystals help remove stains and prevent bacteria buildup. They can be found in pharmacies, and their use is very simple. We only need to brush the aligners beforehand as explained earlier, pour the crystals or tablet into a glass with enough water to cover the aligners, and leave them there for 15 minutes. Then, shake them for about 20 seconds, rinse with water, and they are ready!
