Periodontics

Periodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with the health, care, and maintenance of the periodontium.

And what is the periodontium? Well, it is the set of structures that surround the tooth and provide support. These include the alveolar bone, the gums, the periodontal ligament, and the root cementum. Periodontitis (also known as pyorrhea) is a bacterial disease that initially presents as gingivitis and then progresses to destruction of all these supporting tissues, which, if not controlled, can lead to tooth loss.

It is for this reason that this branch of dentistry is essential for preserving oral health over time.
